Mr Ndabezinhle is a published author of a ““A destructive way of Living”. The book is a riveting account of addiction, the disease and substance abuse disorder. He has written his second book, it is called “Addiction is minimized”, it has more enunciation on the black South African community and how the past continues to influence the current state of affairs.
Through his first book, “A destructive way of Living” Mabuya shares real-life and real-time experiences, and he humanises what goes on in the mind and body of people afflicted with the disease of addiction. Mabuya does blog and website articles for his own website, he is a life coach and also a public speaker who has survived addiction himself. Mabuya is a civil engineer, a parent, a friend and a member of society, and his book; “A destructive way of Living” unpacks how addiction affects everyone and anyone; the family member, friends and colleagues – the educated folk and those who are well-off, not just the user, the illiterate or the poor.
Mabuya created a non-profit-organization in 2020, it is called TheGoodnews Company. “We support victims of addiction largely by using education and interaction. We do drug and alcohol screening and assessments and provide psychotherapy and support. We are not a treatment centre, yet, but we know how to recover and take control of their lives again; we help people by teaching them and their loved ones that recovery from drugs and alcohol is possible and we show them how we have and continue to do it” Mabuya says. He has also created a website; it is called the TheGoodnews (www.thegoodnews.org.za).
Led by Ndabezinhle Mabuya; TheGoodnews company is a group of people and a platform that is designed to encourage learning that is meaningful, he has designed meaningful education material that is easy to comprehend and relate to, and with his team they do capacity building workshops and awareness programmes that empower people who are suffering from addiction. “We want to empower people to recover from addiction, and empower families and friends with knowledge to assist loved ones suffering from addiction”, says Mabuya.
Widespread drug use is often encouraged and enabled by society. Society has and continues to create addicts that we see in most street corners. It is therefore important that communities and families work together to undo this. Children grow up in a society where getting drunk and getting high are the order of the day. Alcohol is worshipped, used as means to show joy, satisfaction, social status, and has even become part of funeral events.
Addiction is a generational disease that requires attitude changes at every level. If this does not happen, we will see growing numbers of;
• People begging for food and money to feed their addiction.
• More families will be broken.
• More people will be imprisoned
• More jobs will be lost
• More deaths will be experienced due to this illness.
Mabuya says; “Change has to happen. It needs to start at home. Communities need to come together to change our social disfunction and fight this generational disease and disorder that disrupts so many happy and functional homes.” The GoodNews has been carefully designed to educate and capacitate people so that they can make these changes and continue to make better choices in life.
We do not focus on just the addict but we pay a lot of attention to the family members; the children, the spouses and the grand parents who are distressed and confused. A lot of people do not believe or they choose not to believe that addiction is an illness. Addiction, like other mental illnesses, it is stigmatized, many people will not accept or they will deny that they have this disease even when all the signs are there. No one fixes a problem if they do not know or accept that they have it, and no one will look for help or accept it if they do not think that they need it.
The Goodnews Company is currently doing a run of campaigns and community/capacity building initiatives to create awareness and empower people to recover and assist others to recover. We do talks and counselling for individuals, families and groups, we also make donations to distressed families etc. We post educational and supportive content in our website and the blog allows real time interaction (questions and answers) with our team of experts and professional service providers that we work with. We plan to reach out to as many people as possible; people of all races, religions, ages and gender. We want people to know that addiction is not a choice, it is an illness and it leads to permanent health complications and even death. We want people to know that if addiction is taken seriously like a chronic illness that it is, it can be overcome, and people can recover and regain control of their lives and the well being of those that they love and care about.
